2002 MORE PROTEIN Lucky For Some A More Protein Compilation- Boy George : This compilation from Boy George's label, More Protein's 11-year history is a seamless collection of dance music that comes across at times winningly catchy and elsewhere a bit too derivative. Things start confidently with "Aquarius" by Freddy & Herman with a hypnotic melody interwoven with beautiful vocals, but ends a bit weakly with "Freedom" by the Armchair Resistance and Amanda Ghost, though the song contains the creative addition of lyrics from the classic "Motherless Child." In between there's "Doors to Manuel" by RAG (most of the band names are various guises for Boy George with various artists), featuring a great Dragnet-type melody, and "See Through" by CD:UK, a highly remixed version of the 1999 Culture Club song "See Thru" which highlights Boy George's warm blue-eyed soul vocals coming through in a distorted fashion with a perfect diva-esque groove. There's also the rocking dance track "Liberation" by Lippy Lou, where she insists, "Come out of the closet boy," and "A Kind of Loving" by FrostyBoy featuring Eve Gallagher with staccato beats and dramatic layered vocals completing this dancefloor mover. "Let Love Come Down" ("Tomislav Remix") by Colein features universal lyrics, a driving melody, and vocals that seem to float. On the classic "Generations of Love" ("Timewriter Remix") by Jesus Loves You, the mix is not the most innovative but is definitely high energy. Originally quite a controversial song, "Everything Starts With an E" ("Shuffle Remix") by Ezee Possee, has not aged well, though it is considered a classic to many. The rest of this collection also contains some great moments, but there are also a few songs, such as "Zing" by Yo2Go, that are a bit too dance clich?d. The first 10,000 copies of Lucky for Some came with a bonus CD of a cappella tracks for those feeling the need to make their own mixes of some of the featured songs as well as a couple of others. The CD booklet also includes Boy George's story of his foray into label land and is infused with his usual wit and humor. This collection for the most part contains classic grooves and is a great introduction to the More Protein label. Simon Cantlon, All Music Guide

  • JESUS LOVES YOU/BOY GEORGE

    The Martyr Mantras

    CUMCD1) More Protein 1990

When he released The Martyr Mantras, under the collective name of Jesus Loves You in the UK, and under his own name in the rest of the world, Boy George had been an important figure in the pop world for eight years, and it already seemed like an eternity. During that time, he’d known it all, from being an It Girl in club land, to international superstardom with Culture Club, to drug scandals.
After the collapse of Culture Club and the re-launch of Boy George as a solo artist, he enjoyed unequal success with his albums. Sold did pretty well, supported by strong singles (Sold, Keep Me In Mind, and mainly, Everything I Own and To Be Reborn). Tense Nervous Headache and, mostly, Boyfriend/High Hat, the follow-ups, if good records, disconcerted his public by a generally more dance orientated sound. This is why, when working on The Martyr Mantras, and realising the club potential for it, George decided to hide behind the Jesus Loves You alias. This was definitely a clever move, as After The Love, the first single taken from the album, co-written with Jon Moss, received critical acclaim. But it was not until Generations Of Love was released than Boy George would reach public success again. The track became omnipresent in all the UK clubs, and remains, to this day, a classic. The album delved deeper into house, deep house and soul, and included brilliant songs, such as Love’s Gonna Let You Down, the magnificent Love Hurts, and even featured the political No Clause 28, as well as the infectious Bow Down Mister, blessed with an acoustic guitar and an hypnotic beat. The Martyr Mantra benefited of an impeccable production, and sounds as modern today as it did then.
It would take five years for George to release another album, Cheapness & Beauty, changing direction once again. Boy George is as unpredictable with his music as he is with his outfits. The Martyr Mantras surprised when it was released, and still does today. It is an excellent dance record, while still retaining the song writing quality of his other records. The Martyr Mantras is his finest album to date
