I had prison coming to me, says Boy George
By Sara Mccorquodale
Last updated at 11:08 AM on 24th October 2009
Boy George has admitted in a frank interview he wasn't surprised he was sent to prison - he had it coming. The slimmed-down star seemed content and as he recalled his four months in detention to Jonathan Ross on his Friday night show. Admitting he was previously a drug addict, the 47-year-old - who spent four months

Happy and content: Boy George said he was the happiest he has ever been to Jonathan Ross
The singer and DJ, who had appeared bloated and exhausted prior to his time in behind bars - had a healthy glow and seemed positive about his life and upcoming projects. He also revealed he had made friends in prison, who he writes to and sends money.
Wearing his trademark trilby and black eyeliner, he said: 'In a way I had it (prison) coming, it wasn't that big a surprise. I kind of knew it was going to happen.'
The former Culture Club star, whose real name is George O'Dowd, described his short stay in London's notorious Pentonville Prison at the beginning of his sentence

Clean: The star admitted he was a drug addict before going into prison
'You walk in and you've got the balcony and people shouting Karma Chameleon but people were quite sweet,' he said. 'There are some nice people in prison, but you get a lot of attention when you come in - especially if you're Boy George.'
Despite the initial shock of being incarcerated, the star quickly immersed himself in prison life.
He said: 'I just thought I'm going to make this work for me. I got a job quite quickly and worked in the kitchen. People expected me to be like Ruth Ballinger in Cell Block H.'

Frank: Ross questioned the former Culture Club singer on his time in prison
He also revealed fans, friends and family were hugely supportive throughout his prison stay sending him kettle and eiderdown - plus a few less conventional gifts.
'Elton John sent me me this huge ghetto blaster but I couldn't have it,' he said. 'I also got sent a chocolate willy too which was quite funny.'
Concluding the interview he said: 'I'm really happy - this is the happiest I've ever been in my life.'
The Eighties pop star's was jailed in January shackling rent boy Audun Carlsen, 29,to a wall in his East London flat in 2007. The Norwegian freed himself and fled in his underpants.
He was sentenced to 15 months, but was released May for good behaviour.

Shamed singer BOY GEORGE penned a track about AMY WINEHOUSE while he was in prison earlier this year (09).
The former Culture Club frontman, real name George O'Dowd, was jailed in January (09) for the false imprisonment and assault of male escort Audun Carlsen in 2007. He served just four months of his 15 month sentence and was released in May (09) for good behaviour - but he spent his time behind bars working on new music. And O'Dowd reveals he was inspired by troubled singer Winehouse when he was writing new song Your Pain Makes A Beautiful Sound.
He tells Britain's The Times newspaper, "When I was away (in prison), I wrote a lot of stuff, which will be released next year. I wrote a diary and songs. I got into trouble because I wrote on the wall: 'Some things are past understanding, you just need a place to land.' "It was part of a lyric. I actually wrote a song about Amy when I was in prison."
