NEW DATE ADDED - 15TH NOVEMBER 2008!

THE BOY IS BACK IN TOWN!

WITH SUPPORT FROM DECLAN BENNETT

KARMA CAMELEON, DO YOU REALLY WANT TO HURT ME, CHURCH OF THE POISON

MIND, EVERYTHING I OWN AND MANY MANY MORE

'Beyond...the face paint, lies a great British soul voice. Chuch Of The Poison Mind was delivered at breakneck speed and overflowed with joie de vivre. Do You Really Want To Hurt Me? was the very epitome of dreaminess and the beloved Karma Chameleon gained a new layer of loveliness in a new, stately incarnation'. - THE EVENING STANDARD

Some may say that George's life has been a soap opera played out in the tabloids since his meteroic rise to international stardom in 1982. There is however one undeniable truth his incredible and instantly recognisable voice that has sold millions of albums worldwide.

George finally returned to the live concert stage in February this year after a 10 year absence. He wowed audiences and critics with a show packed with his best known and widely loved hits from Culture Club, his solo career, great covers and new writing.

His unmistakable voice was as solid as ever, his raunchy moves revved up the crowd and confidence simply oozed. A great showman. - Southend Echo

Outstanding voice...his solo set proved who really was the star of Culture Club. - The Scottish Sun

A throughraly entertaining concert that embodied all that should continue to be treasured about Boy George. - Newcastle Evening Chronicle.

"Culture Club is a living soap opera and at times I have to pinch myself because it is beyond madness". - Boy George 1999.

I'm not bad, I'm just dysfunctional | 27 octobre 2008

'I'm not bad, I'm just dysfunctional'

Boy George has enjoyed the highest highs and the lowest lows that fame has to offer. He tells KAREN PRICE that leaving his excesses behind doesn't make him a boring person...

“I DON'T think I've ever been a bad person,” says Boy George, “just a bit dysfunctional.”

After being catapulted to fame in the early '80s when he fronted Culture Club, the man christened George O'Dowd fell from a great height into that all-consuming pit of fame; a heroin addiction fuelling overdoses, arrests and a turbulent love life.

But the 47-year-old Boy George of today is putting his life back together and it was yet another of those high profile arrests that finally gave him the kick in the sequins that he needed.

Three years ago, he was arrested in Manhattan on suspicion of possessing cocaine and he was later ordered to pick up litter from the streets of New York as part of his community service – and it proved to be the last straw.

“Everyone knows I've had trials and tribulations but I reached the point where I thought ‘Enough, I'm bored of getting arrested',” he says.

“It's been a gradual process. But I've taken a bit more responsibility for stuff in my life.”

He has just released a new single called Yes We Can which he says is characterised by an unusual feeling for him, optimism.

“I'm reflecting my state of mind,” he says.

“It's a song about me and what I've been going through – my own personal journey. It's the Buddhist idea that the promised land is here.

“I don't really write happy songs. I normally write melancholy and sad and there's nothing wrong with that – it's something everyone can relate to, everyone has heartbreak.

“But it's nice to write something uplifting and positive. A lot of stuff I'm writing at the moment has that edge to it – optimistic.”

Boy George, who sparked a craze for the androgynous look during his Culture Club days, says those living in the spotlight can choose to enjoy their lives or make them complicated.

“I've been in many wonderful situations but I've not been present,” he admits, referring to the drug addiction.

“But I'm learning to do that as I get older. You can teach yourself to think differently and I've done that. It's almost like rebooting yourself like you would a computer.

“I've taken more responsibility for what I do.

“I can cause trouble in an empty house but you can make a choice not to do that.

“When I look at George Michael it's chaotic, sweaty and miserable, and I've been there.

“It's the same with Amy Winehouse – I've been that woman.

“I'm not looking at those people in a mocking way but I'm glad it's not me.”

When it comes to offering them advice, George says they need to consider their loved ones as well as themselves.

“You're not just hurting yourself – you're hurting the people who love you. For me, just seeing my mother's face when I'd done something bad was enough really.

“You get bored of it – it becomes like Groundhog Day.”

These days Boy George is channelling his energy in a more creative direction. He's been working on a new album, which is set to be released early next year – “I've never stopped writing and I've quite a catalogue of stuff I haven't released” – and his diary is filling up with the right kind of engagements; his solo tour will be followed by a May 2009 return to Cardiff on the Here And Now package tour where he joins Kim Wilde, Pete Burns and Brother Beyond among others.

“I don't have too much drama in my life at the moment,” he concludes.

“It doesn't make you boring at all.”

I’m bored of getting arrested | 27 octobre 2008

I'm bored of getting arrested

Boy George became a huge success during the early '80s when he fronted Culture Club. But soon his life was spinning out of control. Now he's back in the driving seat and he tells Karen Price he's staying there

GEORGE O'Dowd tells me he is finally in a positive frame of mind. After being catapulted to fame in the early '80s when he fronted Culture Club, the man better known as Boy George fell from a great height.

He developed a heroin addiction and the tabloids were full of stories about his overdoses, arrests and turbulent love life.

Three years ago, he was arrested in Manhattan on suspicion of possessing cocaine and he was later ordered to pick up litter from the streets of New York as part of his community service.

But Boy George – it seems strange giving this title to a 47-year-old man – appears to have put his demons behind him and he's just released a new single, Yes We Can, and embarked on a tour, which heads to Wales this weekend.

And he says he has no intention of returning to his troubled past. “I'm reflecting my state of mind,” Boy George says of his new upbeat single which is, in fact, inspired by American Presidential candidate Barack Obama.

“It's been a gradual process. Everyone knows I've had trials and tribulations but I reached the point where I thought ‘enough'. I'm bored of getting arrested. I've taken a bit more responsibility for stuff in my life.”

Boy George penned the single last April. “I was travelling and heard the Iowa speech Barack Obama did. I just dipped into it but the message was very positive,” he says. “He was very eloquent. I just think he has an honest agenda and he looks like a good guy. No politician, whoever they are, will change everything but having him as representative will be better than George Bush or McCain.

“But it's a song about me and what I've been going through – my own personal journey. It's the Buddhist idea that the promised land is here.

“I don't really write happy songs. I normally write melancholy and sad and there's nothing wrong with that – it's something everyone can relate to, everyone has heartbreak.

“But it's nice to write something uplifting and positive. A lot of stuff I'm writing at the moment has that edge to it.”

Boy George, who sparked a craze for the androgynous look during his Culture Club days, says that those living in the spotlight can choose to enjoy their lives or make them complicated.

“I've been in many wonderful situations but I've not been present,” he admits, referring to the drug addiction. “But I'm learning to do that as I get older. You can teach yourself to think differently and I've done that. It's almost like rebooting yourself like you would a computer.

“I don't think I've ever been a bad person, just a bit dysfunctional. But I've taken more responsibility for what I do.

“When I look at George Michael it's chaotic, sweaty and miserable, and I've been there. It's the same with Amy Winehouse – I've been that woman.

“I'm not looking at those people in a mocking way but I'm glad it's not me.”

When it comes to offering them advice, George says they need to consider their loved ones as well as themselves.

“You're not just hurting yourself – you're hurting the people who love you.”

Boy George has been working on a new album, which is set to be released early next year.

“After the tour I will concentrate on doing the record. I've never stopped writing and I've a catalogue of stuff I haven't released. I'm just deciding what to put on the album.”

He was recently the subject of a documentary for Living TV.

“It was a documentary and not a series. I don't think I could handle doing it all the time – it was bad enough having a camera with me for seven weeks. They try to turn you into a household product – ‘George drinks tea, George walks through doors'.”

So why did he do it? “The last one I did I hated but this time I'm in a better place so it was a chance to do it with a clear head and be aware of things.”

He jokes that he would love to do an “anti-reality” show.

“It would be how I imagined Bowie's life when I was 14. He would never stub his foot or anything like that and just spent all day living a showbiz life.”

When I speak to him – ironically he's calling from hotel room number 101 – Boy George has just got back from a tour of South America.

“It was amazing just to go to places like Chile where I think nobody knows who I am. But people were singing along to the music and I saw Chilean drag queens dressed as me.”

He says there are differences in his career now to those heady, excessive, days of the past.

“I remember how exciting it was in the early days. I would call my mum from an amazing hotel room but then I stopped doing it and became blase. You are at the Grand Canyon and on the phone arguing with someone, or at the Taj Mahal distracted by a petty band squabble. It's not like that any more. In South America it was just wonderful to be there.”

And it seems like the new, calm George is here to stay.

“I don't have too much drama in my life at the moment. I can cause trouble in an empty house but you can make a choice not to do that. It doesn't make you boring at all.”
