Boy George's Culture Club ex-lover fears the jailed star won't cope wi th being behind bars - but hopes it will "straighten him out".
Drummer Jon Moss, 51, admitted yesterday he was "shocked" at George being caged for 15-months for imprisoning a male escort.
He said: "I just hope he's all right. This is all so very sad. I don't know if he'll be strong enough to handle prison.
"He's a tough character, but it will be very hard for him inside. The sentence came totally out of the blue. I'm shocked at the thought of him being there and can't believe it has ended like this.
"George's life has always been surreal and a bit strange.
"While I am concerned, there is also the possibility that prison might just straighten him out, you don't know."
Moss had a volatile relationship with George and once called the Karma Chameleon singer a "nightmare ex-wife".
They bitterly fell out over plans to reform Culture Club in 2006, but healed their rift after a chance meeting six months ago. Moss, 51, who now lives in north London with his wife and three kids, added: "It was good to see him. There's no animosity between us now.
"I will go and see him in prison, of course I will."
On Friday, the fallen idol, 47 - real name George O'Dowd - was jailed for handcuffing Norwegian Audun Carlsen, 29, at his East London flat after a drug-fuelled naked photoshoot.
Carlsen was whipped with a chain by the pop star as he fled in his underpants.
Last night fragile George - bloated, pale and emotionless at his trial - was being held in Pentonville's hospital wing amid staff fears for his mental state.

'They'll kill me,' says jailed singer Boy George
Richard Lyttle, who was bailed out later, said he tried to warn George and told him, "You're gay and a celebrity - the other prisoners will come after you." Boy George wept as he was sent to prison and said, "I can't go to jail... They will try to kill me because of who I am," Rechard told the Mirror.
"When I walked into the cell I saw this fat, bald bloke sitting in the corner crying like a baby. He was shaking like a leaf, a total wreck. He kept sobbing over and over, 'I can't go to jail I'll be killed.
"He was crying about how he was just a fat old pop star that everyone was laughing at," Richard said while describing the condition of the fallen singer, who was jailed for 15 months on Friday for falsely imprisoning a Norwegian male escort Audun Calrsen and thrashing him with a chain, the paper said.
The 47-year-old singer, whose real name is George O'Dowd, allegedly faced abuses from one of the prisoners.
"I walked over to him and said, 'What's the problem, mate? He looked and me and said, 'I'm George O'Dowd.' I was confused and he screamed, 'I'm Boy George.' He broke down in tears and couldn't stand up because he was so upset," said Richard, who was later bailed out for driving offences.
George, who sold more than 25 million records with his band Culture Club in the 1980s, has been kept on a suicide watch after arriving at Pentonville. PTI

The Eighties pop star Boy George was sentenced to 15 months in jail today for violently imprisoning a Norwegian male escort at his flat.
The musician whose real name is George O'Dowd was found guilty of false imprisonment for chaining Audun Carlsen to his bed in Shoreditch, East London in April 2007 and beating him with the help of another man.
Today a judge told the star, who was wearing a black duffel coat and hooded top, that he carried out a "shocking and degrading" attack, which deprived Mr Carlsen of his liberty.
While I accept that Mr Carlsen's physical injuries were not serious or permanent, in my view there can be no doubt that your pre-meditated, callous and humiliating handcuffing and detention of Mr Carlsen shocked, degraded and traumatised him. He was deprived of his liberty and his human dignity without warning or proper explanation to him of its purpose, length or purported justification, Judge David Radford told the singer.
O'Dowd and Mr Carlsen first met through a social networking site primarily for gay and bisexual men and they parted on good terms, even though the former Culture Club frontman suspected Mr Carlsen had hacked into his computer. The singer paid the younger man £300 of the £400 they had agreed.
In the next few weeks, they exchanged e-mails in which the singer accused Mr Carlsen of breaking into his computer system but then said that he would be perfectly happy to see you naked asap. He referred to Mr Carlsen's heavenly butt and eventually they agreed to meet for a second time. It was when Mr Carlsen returned to the flat that things took a violent turn.
Earlier the court heard that because of the conviction, O'Dowd will probably no longer be able to perform in Japan or America, where he has large fan bases.
Two fans flew over from New York and Canada to sit in a packed number 1 court to listen to proceedings along with 20 friends and family of O'Dowd.

Boy George's barrister admits singer behaved like a 'drug-crazed idiot'
Boy George and the male escort he imprisoned were behaving like drug-crazed idiots during the infamous incident which led to the singer's conviction, his barrister admitted today.
Adrian Waterman said the star's continuing battle with cocaine addiction contributed to his actions in April last year.
He called for the musician whose real name is George O'Dowd to receive a suspended rather than custodial sentence at a hearing today.
Mr Waterman told Snaresbrook Crown Court, in East London: He's on the way up. The fact that he is, when sober, a kind and generous man means there is no shortage of people to help him through his recovery.
The barrister said O'Dowd would need time to pay £5,000 costs and added that many celebrities had written to the court in his defence.
At his trial, where O'Dowd was found guilty of false imprisonment, the court heard that he told police that he had chained Norwegian Audun Carlsen to his bed in his flat in Shoreditch, East London, in April 2007 while he investigated alleged tampering with his computer.

The court heard that, during the attack, O'Dowd was screaming F****** whore! Now you're going to get what you deserve. He said he was dragged along the floor towards the bed and a manacle was put on his right hand and attached to a hook drilled in the wall.
The second man left, and O'Dowd produced a plastic box containing chains, sex toys and leather straps, Snaresbrook Crown court was told.
Mr Carlsen told the court he was then able to use the handcuffs as a tool to unscrew the hook from the wall. He ran to the door with O'Dowd pursuing him, lashing out with a metal chain. He managed to escape and ran out on to the street in just his underwear screaming for help.
O'Dowd told police: I asked him to come (back to my flat) because I wanted to find out if this guy had borrowed my stuff.
I got a friend there because I wanted to make sure he didn't leave so I could check the computer and his phone. The friend was just there in case he tried to stab me or take a hammer to me.
He denied to police that he punched or assaulted Mr Carlsen or swung a chain at him as the escort fled the flat, and suggested the bruises Mr Carlsen sustained could have been due to the fact that he was HIV positive.
Mr Carlsen told the court that O'Dowd concocted the story about computer tampering so he could punish him for not having sex during the first meeting. He said: I think he couldn't handle the refusal me not having sex with him.
The defence claimed that the dispute was over whether Mr Carlsen had stolen photographs and the suggestion it was because Mr Carlsen refused to have sex with O'Dowd on the previous occasion was entire fantasy or a lie.
O'Dowd, who swept the streets of New York in orange overalls in 2006 as his punishment for wasting police time after admitting to falsely reporting a burglary at his Manhattan apartment, looked grim-faced as the jury found him guilty of falsely imprisoning the male escort.
