Charity Event In London | 14 novembre 2009

CHILDREN WITH AIDS CHARITY

Boy George is to be a special guest at an event being held to benefit Children with AIDS.

With an extraordinary 2009 coming to an end that has seen the recession making headlines everyday, it has turned the normally difficult task of fundraising for charities into an even greater challenge. However Children With AIDS Charity (CWAC) decided that this just meant they needed to get creative and find new ways of fundraising with the help of Wired Events.

AIDS is one of the most supported causes around the world but the knowledge that it exists within the UK amongst families and children seems relatively unknown. CWAC aims to eradicate the prejudice facing these children and families living with HIV & AIDS and helps them on a daily basis with the financial concerns, stigmatism and emotional suffering which many of them have to endure behind closed doors. It was therefore decided that an event which could offer a voice to those children and raise the profile of CWAC’s work to a new younger generation which would be important for the future of the charity and its essential work. So Singing for Silence was created.

The event is on Tuesday 1st December, to coincide with World AIDS Day, and will take place at the 100 Club, 100 Oxford Street, London. The night will play host to a range of well-known and up-and-coming artists who all have a strong acoustic vibe to their music. CWAC are excited to announce that Sarah Champion from Absolute Radio will be hosting the night which will include: Jamie Hartman, from Ben’s Brother, who will be playing a solo acoustic set; and the legendary Boy George, who is will be performing a few songs accompanied by John Themis on acoustic guitar. With the night rounded up by an exciting talent with a folk/rock/blues feel – Marcus Bonfanti & band.

Tickets go on sale Monday 9th November via We Got Tickets or from 100 Club website. Doors open at 7.30pm on Tuesday 1st December and acts are on stage from 8.00pm.

The Albert Kennedy Trust

Sir Ian McKellen helps raise £15,000 for homeless charity

Over 300 partygoers raised £15,000 for young homeless lesbian, gay and bisexual and people at an exclusive auction staged by the Albert Kennedy Trust on Sunday.Peter Lloyd 11 November 2009

Over 300 partygoers raised £15,000 for young homeless lesbian, gay and bisexual and people at an exclusive auction staged by the Albert Kennedy Trust on Sunday.

The event, hosted by Sir Ian McKellen,  took place in Soho's Greek Street, where BBC TV’s Open House presenter Kristian Digby and Dr David Bull encouraged party goers to dig deep by auctioning an oil painting of Sir Ian McKellen for £5,700.

Celebrity DJs Boy George and Fat Tony also performed at the event.

Sponsored by Aviva, Box Bar and W H Patterson, the event marked both the 20th anniversary of the Trust and the 10th anniversary of social networking site Jake, which is now the world’s largest community of gay professionals with over 30,000 members.

Craig Solomon, Operations Director of Jake said, “We are so grateful to our members for raising such a significant amount for such a worthy cause. Gay professionals have really made an impact on the lives of young people who turn to the AKT for advice and support. A big thank you to everyone who came to our 10th Birthday in aid of the Albert Kennedy Trust”

Jake was founded 10 years ago to provide both online and offline networking for the gay professional community. It holds weekly events for its members including social networking drinks, business society dinners, media society events with guest speakers, a mentoring programme and a voice for the gay community in the political arena.

Jonathan Penny, Fundraising and Communications Officer for the Albert Kennedy Trust comments: “Homophobic prejudice is still rife in society today, and as a result many young gay people face rejection by family or peers. Too often, some of these people are forced out on the streets.  The funds raised tonight will enable us to help provide safe housing and a supportive environment for young people who otherwise would be in grave danger. We would like to say a big thank you to our donors and sponsors for making this such a successful evening.”
